5 out of 5 stars "Roy Rogers B-Western Series ... Susanna Pass (1949) ... Republic Pictures "   December 24, 2007
J. Lovins (Missouri-USA)
Republic Pictures presents "SUSANNA PASS" (29 April 1949) (67 mins/B&W/Color) (Fully Restored/Dolby Digitally Remastered) --- Roy Rogers (born Leonard Slye) moved to California in 1930, at the age of 18 --- played in such musical groups as The Hollywood Hillbillies, Rocky Mountaineers, Texas Outlaws and his own group, the International Cowboys --- In 1934 he formed a group with Bob Nolan and Tim Spencer called "Sons of the Pioneers" --- While in that group he was known as Leonard Slye, then Dick Weston and finally Roy Rogers --- Their songs included "Cool Water" and "Tumbling Tumbleweeds" --- They first appeared in the western "Rhythm on the Range" (1936), starring Bing Crosby --- In 1937 Roy went solo and made his first starring film in 1938, "Under Western Stars" (1938) --- He made almost 100 films --- then came television, "The Roy Rogers Show" (1951) ran on CBS from October 1951 through September 1964.

Under William Witney (Director), Edward J. White (Producer), John K. Butler (Screenwriter), Sloan Nibley (Screenwriter), Morton Scott (Composer (Music Score), Stanley Wilson (Composer (Music Score), Tony Martinelli (Editor), Frank Hotaling (Production Designer), Frank Arrigo (Art Director), John McCarthy (Set Designer), Charles Thompson (Set Designer), Adele Palmer (Costume Designer), T.A. Carman (Sound/Sound Designer), Howard Lydecker (Special Effects), Theodore Lydecker (Special Effects) - - - - Our story line and plot, Dale Evans returns to Roy's series with an interesting role as a scientists and ex-Marine who assists in the direction of a fish hatchery --- Roy and The Riders of the Purple Sage as forest rangers, thwart the scheme of a local newspaper publisher who kills his brother (owner of the fish hatchery) to gain control of a lake rich in oil deposits --- Like many other fans I've always divided the Roy Rogers' films into three categories --- The early films directed by Joseph Kane, the middle, and the later films directed by William Witney --- By far the best are the later films by Witney --- Almost all of the Witney films feature lavish exteriors and better than B-Western average scripts --- This 1949 "Susanna Pass" is no exception --- Filmed in "TruColor" it is a cut above the average B-Western --- While Roy has always been considered a B-Movie star the truth is, his later Westerns could really be considered top notch of them all --- some wonderful tunes, A GOOD GOOD MORNIN' -- SUSANA PASS -- BRUSH THOSE TEARS FROM YOUR EYES -- TWO-GUN GOOD RITA -- THAT'S MY GAL.

This is a good movie. I have it in VHS 67 min. and DVD 64 min. Whatever the diference is I can't tell. Most Collectors of Roy Roger Movies know that Republic edited them to show on TV back in the fifties, but Roy Rogers own the rights to his name. Few of the orginal full length versions even exist. Several that were originally in color only exist in B&W.

All the songs have been edited out in this DVD edition. Amazon.com should have mentioned this in their description of the product. Shame on them for not doing so.
